Disney’s Beauty and the Beast was the first ever Broadway production to perform in Indonesia. The shows ran from 26 May to 7 June 2015 as part of their world tour at the newly opened Ciputra Artpreneur Theatre, Indonesia’s first international-standard theatre. The venue is part of a shopping mall in Central Jakarta, just like Singapore’s Mastercard Theatres in MBS, only this one can be difficult to access if you don’t know the tricks. I went to see the 5 June evening show. It was almost full house, though I suspected many came on complimentary tickets, like I did.

The show itself was as what you’d expect from a Broadway production. I think all of the cast performed very well. They and all the props provided great introduction to world class production of a musical theatre. Children were very much entertained by the colourful costumes and the singing and dancing, in addition to the already famous story. I could only hope that this would lead to more international musical production coming to perform in Jakarta. The tickets were too expensive for Indonesian standard, though. Die-hard musical fans may be willing to pay, but even rich Jakartans are likely to think twice before deciding to buy the tickets.
